As I type this, Claire is polishing her swede, and dreaming of best in show at the Herne Hill swede competition. That is a real event btw, and not my attempt at humour. Claire is so excited, that she has baked a cake containing everyone's least favourite root vegetable. She hopes to win best in show. I fully expect her to, but only because no one else entered even though Jay Rayner is judging.
Meanwhile, on the other side of London, I am being equally tragic, but in a more kitchen-counter-cluttering-kind-of-way. I have discovered (thank you John Lewis cookware department) the electric citrus juicer.
It is funny how life's small pleasures are often the greatest. Discovering a £20 note in a jacket you've not worn for a year, breaking the foil on a new jar of Nutella or getting a seat on a crowded tube, increasingly fill me with more joy than the bigger stuff. If that is what getting old is about, then I am IN.
So back to the juicer. Me and my 4yo start each day with a glass of freshly-squeezed orange. This time of year, our juice is flamingo-pink from the blood oranges that are in season and some times we sneak in a rogue grapefruit too. It is a cheap, delicious, vitamin-C-clad way to start the day and so much nicer than anything from a carton. I also think it helps explain why I rarely get colds anymore.
I used to squeeze my oranges on this handheld version - nice to look at, cheap to buy, but ultimately impractical, unless you like pips. So I traded up for this one that catches pips, but doesn't hold much liquid and is a bit messy. And then I discovered this one. The Rolls Royce (well, Skoda Flavia, at least) of juicers. It is fast, cheap (£15) and wrings out every last drop of juice. It has a removable, dishwasher proof jug, that holds nearly half a litre. You just press a button and the middle bit whizzes around and you catch the juice underneath. It does look/sound a bit like a sex toy. Although I have no empirical knowledge of this. I promise. Either way, it is in short a game changer and I love it.

You probably know this, but apparently you get more juice out of citrus if the fruit is at room temperature rather than straight from the fridge. Fun factoid!
ReplyDeleteGreat factoid!
DeleteHello! My dreams of best swede in show were just that, dreams. Sob. There were swede thai curry, swede falafel and swede ice cream. My cake didn't get a look in. Although it did taste rather nice. Maybe if I'd put some pork in it Jay Rayner would have liked it more.
ReplyDeleteJuicer sounds great, perfect time of year it. I may have to invest.
Can't believe the cake didn't make it :-(. I was rooting for you, Claire!
ReplyDeleteRooting? Love it!
